The word universe literally means “one song”. While I know this isn’t a new idea, it struck me with fresh resonance this morning. It made me reflect on unity — not as uniformity, but as harmony — and on the ancient notion of the “music of the spheres,” where every planet, being, and breath is part of a greater cosmic composition.
Where do we see glimpses of this One Song in our world?
We see it in Native American drumming circles, where each heartbeat aligns with the rhythm of the drum until the many become one — one heartbeat, one presence. We feel and hear it in the electric synchrony of a band locked into perfect timing, where each musician is attuned to the others, creating a performance greater than the sum of its parts. These are moments of energy coherence — where individuality doesn’t dissolve but contributes to a deeper, shared resonance.
But how do we move toward this kind of unity in our daily lives — especially in a world divided by binary thinking, where we are so often told it's either this or that, us or them, right or wrong?
What if we embraced a “Both/And” mindset instead of “Either/Or”?
What if difference wasn’t a threat, but an invitation to expand the song — to add a new chord, a different rhythm, a fresh voice?
To live as part of the Uni-Verse is to understand that we are not meant to sing in unison, but in harmony. Each of us is a distinctive ray of light, a unique note, emanating from one common source.
May we learn to listen deeply — to ourselves, to each other, and to the subtle music beneath all things. May we honor the distinctiveness of every voice, while never losing sight of the shared song we are here to sing.
